Job overview

We are seeking to appoint a full-time Welfare Manager to have responsibility for delivering an excellent safeguarding and welfare experience and being a member of the out of hours on-call Level 3 team and Deputy Designated Lead for Safeguarding.

You will have experience having worked with under 18s in a similar educational setting and understand the importance of Welfare and Safeguarding in a college. The right candidate will be flexible to stay beyond usual college hours as and when required and be quick to make decisions with the welfare of our students at heart.

Key responsibilities

  • Take the role of the Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (or act as the DSL during DSL absence)
  • Oversee the budgets, delivery, resources and operations of the team and its services including promotion and review of the service with transparency and openness. Produce reports and data identifying opportunities and challenges, manage resources efficiently and effectively
  • Manage change and improve quality whilst delivering value for money and increasing participation in the services, ensuring outcomes meet inspection criteria and student needs
  • Produce reports, data, feedback, usage, participation, evaluation and impact measures for the service, establishing effective procedures and systems to support the work of the team
  • Work effectively with staff, other peers, managers and central services to develop the student experience
  • Be a member of the out of hours Safeguarding On Call Team
  • Support in the delivery of training in Safeguarding issues
  • Be responsible for referring students to outside agencies – interagency working
  • Manage the handover from day to night of the care of under 18 boarders, manage the processes around exeats, off site accommodation, arrival and departure to College.
  • Assist in the day-to-day management and deployment of the Welfare Service and help prioritise students as need arises; for GP appointments, referrals and welfare checks
  • On Programme support delivered effectively with the Boarding Manager, Student Experience Team, Academic and Management Team, Leadership Team, Attendance Officer , Reception and LAC staff as well as support services to keep students safe and well and to achieve an excellent student experience
  • Manage, organise, promote and deliver a programme of holistic, relevant, cost effective, impactful events and activities to support learning, enjoyment and achievement against curriculum, inspection and students’ personal requirements in the areas of emotional, physical, sexual, psychological and safety wellbeing
  • Manage the delivery of care of students who are unwell, Health Promotion and physical wellbeing, delivering to standards and procedures set out by the company, legislation and best practice and OPUS guidelines and achieving accredited status of Health Schools/ other relevant quality marks
  • Help organise and oversee the care of any sick students and will be expressly appointed to administer non-prescription medicines to any students suffering from common minor ailments such as sore throats or headaches.
  • Lead, deliver and/or support on a range of other initiatives (such as Positive, Mental Health First Aid) which add value to the Student experience and promote the wellbeing of students at all times
  • Provide 1-to-1 support for students, inc. daily check-ins with Red MDT students and X2 weekly check-ins with Amber MDT
  • Help support students in crisis and those in complex situations requiring immediate attention.
  • Complete Health and Wellbeing Action Support Plans and Star Chart Support Plans with students

Experience and qualification

  • Current First Aid certificate (Essential – or willingness and ability to achieve this)
  • Mental Health First Aid (Essential – or willingness and ability to achieve this)
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent
  • Management experience
