Job Description

Bellerbys College is a well-established international company based in Cambridge. The college is thriving with atmosphere and a hub of activity. We are looking for a Commis Chef to join our hardworking and enthusiastic catering team to assist in the preparation and service of our Catering offer.

This is an ideal role for someone who enjoys working in a small team loves cooking a wide range of international dishes from fresh ingredients.

The ideal candidate must have sound food preparation knowledge and be passionate about providing quality home cooked food. You’ll be tidy and organised and a good team player, outgoing and friendly as you will be on occasion be serving customers and providing a welcome atmosphere for the students and staff of the college. A basic food hygiene certificate and/or Food hygiene knowledge required. 

40hr per week contract Mon-Fri with some weekends

Location: Cambridge

Contract: Maternity cover, Chef 37.5hrs, approx 2 weekends per month 

Key Responsibilities 

  • To be an ambassador for the catering services at UK Study Group
  • To have a friendly and approachable manner in order to provide a warm and welcoming atmosphere for all customers who use the catering facilities
  • To help promote and maintain company standards as outlined in the department standards and company handbook.
  • To comply with statutory Health and Safety, Food safety and Fire regulations
  • Preparation of food to the required standard as directed by the chef in charge completed in a timely and organised manner
  • Preparation of food to the required standard as directed by the chef in charge – completed in a timely and organised manner including finished buffet style main courses, salads and desserts
  • To undertake any general kitchen duties including assisting the kitchen porters, serving on the hot counter, general cleaning or any other tasks as required
  • Maintain a high standard of cleanliness (clean as you go) complying with legislation and standards set by the chef. Use cleaning products in accordance with COSHH training and procedures
  • Assist the chef in charge with HACCP records as directed, reporting any discrepancies immediately to the chef in charge
  • Reporting to chef in charge any food wastage and recording this on daily wastage sheet
  • Adhering to the FIFO policy when using and storing food ensuring that any items are stored in their correct place, labelled and sealed according to company HACCP policy
  • To undertake any function or hospitality duties as and when required
  • Ensure high levels of personal hygiene are kept to at all times in accordance with the company hygiene policies.
  • To attend team meetings as and when required
  • To attend any training courses as required including those which may take place outside of normal working hours.
  • To carry out any reasonable request by a member of the management team

Selection Criteria

Qualifications and Training

  • Level 2 Food hygiene
  • Basic Health & Safety
  • COSHH awareness
  • Fire safety awareness
  • Child protection Level 1 & 2
  • Customer service awareness
  • NVQ L2 Food preparation or equivalent
     

Experience Required

  • 2 years’ experience of food production in a busy kitchen environment  

Knowledge and Skills

  • Basic food preparation knowledge
  • Ability to apply Food safety knowledge to working practice
  • Health & safety awareness
  • Customer service awareness
  • High standard of professional conduct
