Open letter to international students from our UK Director

30 September 2020

Executive Director for the UK and Europe, Dr. Mark Cunnington, welcomes international students to Study Group's UK Centres and Colleges with an open letter.

To all of our international students who have been accepted to study at one of our UK Centres or Colleges, I want to say congratulations and welcome. The UK is home to superb universities and it is a great place to be a student.

As the British Universities Minister wrote recently, “The UK is a tolerant, multicultural society with a rich diversity of cultures, languages, and faiths. The UK higher education also has a well-established reputation for high quality – our universities are among the best in the world. Over 50 serving world leaders have benefited from a British education, and 83% of international graduates surveyed by Universities UK International (UUKi) said their UK degree helped them get their job. A UK education opens doors, wherever you go in the world.”

Study Group students are well-prepared by our excellent academic staff, enabling them to progress to successful study in the UK and beyond that to fulfilling careers in the UK, their home countries or across the world. We have confidence that, with our support and your hard work, you will succeed.

Choosing to study at a UK university is a life-changing decision and one which opens up opportunities for the future. Over 25 years, international students have prepared to enter leading universities around the world with the help of Study Group. Studying at our Colleges and Centres has opened the door to undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in subjects as diverse as Engineering and Law, Business and Accountancy, Architecture and Science.

This year, however, things are different for students coming to the UK.  For many of our students this means studying some of or even all of your courses online this academic year, or taking part in blended learning here in the UK. We are pleased to say, however, that choosing to study on a pathway programme with UK universities still gives an outstanding international experience despite local restrictions.

Student safety is our number one priority, and we are working with staff at each Centre, College and university to put rigorous measures in place to provide a safe and welcoming environment for those who travel to study here. The good news is though, whether you study in the UK or from home, the Study Group team of specialist teachers and support staff are determined to help you achieve your academic aims and to support you as you become part of a community of other international students.

We are working with experts in education technology to develop the highest quality online education and our Prepare for Success course with more than 100 hours of content to develop academic knowledge, skills and language ability will give you a head start in your studies. I am pleased to say that we are working closely with our university partners and steps have been taken to ensure you can progress onto your future studies as planned however you study. In person or at a distance, you will be part of a caring educational community at this challenging time.

If you do have any questions about your studies or the health measures which apply to your Centre or College, we are ready to help answer them. We are here to support you throughout your studies and on to the degrees and future success of which we know you are all capable.

Dr. Mark Cunnington
