Double celebrations for the University of Sheffield International College
14 October 2019
Four years after Study Group and the University of Sheffield began their ambitious collaboration, the International College has seen its highest number of progressed students yet - the same year as its very first cohort of students have graduated from the University.
Preparing international students for university success
Four years after arriving in Sheffield to study a pathway programme, the College’s first cohort of students have graduated with bachelor’s degrees from the University. Offering programmes for both undergraduate and postgraduate students, the International College prepares students for university study through a combination of specialist teaching and student support.
Since Sheffield joined Study Group in 2015, thousands of students have benefited from this approach to international education. This university graduation shows how successful this collaboration continues to be.
The celebrations continue, as September saw 1,105 students progress from the International College to the University – the highest number of progressed students the College has ever seen.
Speaking of the College’s success, College Director Natalie Cryan said:
“I am pleased to see so many of our students progress to the University of Sheffield this year. It’s not easy to get the grades required to study at a World Top 100 University, so it’s testament to the ambition of these students and to all of their hard work.
This achievement also reflects the dedication and talent of our growing team here at the College, all of whom are highly experienced and committed to supporting our students to achieve the best possible results. I look forward to building upon this success as we continually improve our provision, enhance the curriculum and welcome more students.”
Continuing to grow
Sheffield is ranked as one of the top 100 universities in the world. As well as being respected for its research, it offers an exciting student experience in one of the UK’s most diverse and welcoming cities.
Since 2015, the College has gone from strength to strength, with 3,075 students having passed through its doors and on to Sheffield. This most recent academic year saw 98% of students complete their pathway programme. The College has also increased its teaching space to accommodate its growing student body, opening a second building with an additional fourteen classrooms in January 2019.
Dedicated to ensuring students are ready to meet the challenges of life at a Russell Group university, the International College keeps true to Study Group’s vision for a better world through education. After the University’s Students’ Union established the #WeAreInternational campaign in 2013, our International College was one of the first adopters of the strategy in its marketing materials – as well as in the supportive atmosphere of the College itself.
Ali Husain studied the International Foundation Year in Business, Social Sciences and Humanities at the University of Sheffield International College. At his graduation, he said:
“The International College was a bridge for me that made the transition to the University of Sheffield so much easier. The core structure, the way the teaching and learning works, the way we were assessed, made it easy to settle into university. It was a wonderful experience at the College.
I feel really happy, I feel the warmth from everyone. Everyone's wishing me congratulations, you feel on top of the world that you know you've achieved something, and you get the recognition from such a renowned institution in the UK. It is a proud moment for me, so I'm happy to share it with my family.”
