Despite the abysmal weather and transport problems, 317 people booked into BELTE on Saturday arriving from destinations such as Glasgow, Portsmouth, Folkestone, Cambridge, Oxford and London. Teachers from language schools, further and higher education, private and public institutions attended. The event was staffed by Study Group staff and 14 local language school Directors of Studies acting as stewards (courtesy of Sussex DoSA).
After receiving 3 free language books and an idioms dictionary (compliments of Global ELT), visitors browsed the exhibition of 36 stands and signed up for training sessions. The mayor of Brighton and Hove, Bill Randall opened the event with a short speech outlining the importance of ELT to Brighton (estimated value to the town £100 million). This followed an opening diary of the day by Gordon Watts (Study Group and Sussex DoSA) and an address from Huan Japes, Deputy Chief Executive of EnglishUK, who discussed visa issues and Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
After lunch a session was hosted by a guest panel of BELTE experts. The panel, chaired by Hugh Dellar, addressed questions from an audience of over 150 about the future of English Language Teaching and Teachers, Technology developments versus the real person, using translation as a medium of instruction and the economic impact of the recession (general agreement that it should be a time for opportunity not gloom if you look at the rising economies).
BELTE 2012 was a huge success, we're all looking forward to next years' event.
Thanks for a really lovely, free CPD day… staff helpful and friendly, sessions informative, free gifts wonderful… to be recommended
