Job Description

Bellerbys College Brighton is a co-educational independent college for approximately 800 mainly international students. Our students range in age from 14 to young adults, with a wide range of nationalities and mother-tongues.

We are seeking to appoint a qualified Teacher of Politics & History to join our growing team of professionals in one of the leading international education colleges.

The Role

  • Teaching Politics and History at A Level, GCSE and on our own Foundation Course
  • Reporting to the Head of Humanities, the Teacher of Politics & History would work alongside other members of the departments

Job Scope

  • Keep abreast with changes to syllabus for each of the courses taught
  • Help students establish serious work habits by setting a professional example
  • Set demanding expectations for students’ learning, motivation and presentation of work
  • Teach to an appropriate level, ensuring course delivered in time for exam practice
  • Mark student work with constructive comments
  • Keep accurate registers (using Progresso) and mark books
  • Write reports for students – twice termly for first two terms in a year; once per term for summer terms

Key Responsibilities 

  • Write appropriately stimulating and challenging Schemes of Work for Politics and History
  • Effective delivery of courses
  • Ensuring students’ notes are appropriate and well-organised
  • Marking student work and returning within agreed deadlines
  • Marking exams and/or coursework and accurately recording
  • Furnish detailed comments for UCAS applications when requested
  • Liaising with the Head of Faculty, Programme Manager & Exams Officer as appropriate to make exam entries for students taught
  • Writing academic reports as required
  • Using educational technology in teaching, including interactive whiteboard with StudySmart
  • Ensure students have appropriate textbooks, liaising with Head of Humanities as necessary
  • Ensure a punctual start and finish of classes
  • Set a good example to students in terms of appropriate dress, standards of punctuality and attendance
  • Demonstrate a high level of motivation and enthusiasm for teaching
  • Attend regular Faculty and staff meetings, and events
  • Be proactive in taking responsibility for matters relating to health & safety
  • Undertake professional duties that may be reasonable assigned (eg cover, invigilation etc.)
  • Keep accurate daily online and paper registers, and submit registers weekly
  • Tutor duties may be required – dependent on role and college (pastoral and HE guidance pending term and group)
  • Other related activities as may be reasonably requested by the Head of Faculty

Selection Criteria

Qualifications and Training

  • Good first degree essential
  • Good first degree in Politics or History desirable but not essential
  • Teaching qualification desirable but not essential

Experience Required

  • Experience of teaching at least one of these subjects before is essential
  • Experience of teaching both is desirable but not essential
